La Porte Community Church is the oldest community church in Texas. In the fall of 1925, the Baptist, Methodist, Christian, and Presbyterian Churches in La Porte were all having difficulty functioning.
On November 1, 1925, a group of 8 people met to discuss the possibility of forming a community church out of the four churches in La Porte. The idea was met with “enthusiastic approval” by the four churches. The founders were visionaries who felt and saw a present need. However, their vision went far beyond their time into ours. People of different backgrounds and faiths can come together to be one in the Lord. Articles of Agreement were drawn up and submitted to each congregation. In all, 175 persons signed these articles.
The first general meeting of the churches was held on Sunday night, November 15, 1925, when a carefully prepared constitution and by-laws were adopted and La Porte Community Church was born.
In 1936, as each denomination began to form its own church, La Porte Community Church dismissed the departing group with loving regret and wished them Godspeed in their endeavors. In each case, people from each denomination chose to remain a part of La Porte Community Church. Over the years, a great many persons of preferences other than the four original denominations have united with the church.
Today, La Porte Community Church maintains open membership for Christians of all denominations and is affiliated with the Disciples of Christ.
